If I ask myself which fashion item has been the most influential along the history, there is only one name that pops out of my mind: BIKINI!
It dates since the ancient times of Pompeii but during time, people elongated it so much that just a few decades ago, around 1930, it covered the body from ankles till the wrists, being also called the "prison suit".
Did you know that the MISS WORLD contest was initially named the BIKINI FESTIVAL? The press reacted so well that gave it a more appealing name in 1951 - MISS WORLD! But catholic countries like Italy, Spain, Portugal forbade the public appearance it due to a potential interfere with the moral rules. It was only in 1997 that bikini came back into the public spotlight along with the new edition of Miss America.
Slowly by slowly, its influence became so big that it enriched the English dictionary and not only! Tankini, Trikini, Monokini, Zerokini are just a few examples of words having the same suffix root "-kini" that are widely accepted as neologisms in many international dictionaries.
Today, the most expensive bikini is sold with $30 millions. Not bad for something so small, right?
